Los Angeles festivals and annual events

The Rose Parade goes back to 1890, and at 8 a.m. on New Year's Day its flower-covered floats still turn onto Colorado Boulevard in Pasadena. One Saturday in October, Taste of Soul takes over Crenshaw Boulevard, and its organiser counts more than 350,000 people.

100 events come back to Los Angeles every year, and October is the busiest month with 19. 59 of them are free. A card marked Expected is still waiting on the organisers to confirm a date.

A 100-foot Christmas tree goes up in the middle of The Grove, the open-air shopping center on The Grove Drive in Fairfax, and one evening in November its lights come on in a free show presented by FOX 11. The night has live performances, the season's first snowfall, a drone show, fireworks and the arrival of Santa, and it is filmed for broadcast. Get there early. The Grove says space is limited and parking fills fast, so rideshare is the easier way in. If you can't get near the stage, large screens around the property carry a live feed. From the next day Santa sits for photos in the Santa House, and in past seasons snow has fallen over the property every evening through Christmas.

Planning the trip around it

What a Los Angeles hotel night costs after tax and fees, and the dates when rooms run out.

Pasadena on Rose Parade night

On October 19, Old Town and downtown Pasadena had no room for December 31, the night before the 8 a.m. parade. The Langham still sold it, and with a car its fee and valet come to $120 a night before tax.

Staying in Hollywood

The Oscars are set for Sunday, March 14, 2027, at the Dolby Theatre. At hotels with 50 or more rooms, the city's 14% tax and a tourism assessment add about 16% before any fee.

Staying downtown

Star Wars Celebration, April 1 to 4, 2027, and Anime Expo, July 2 to 5, are the hardest weeks to book at the last minute. Hotel Figueroa's fee and valet come to $97 a night plus tax if you drive.

Disneyland and Anaheim

Holidays at the Disneyland Resort run November 13 to January 6. Anaheim Regional Transportation's buses stopped on March 31, 2026, so the walk up Harbor Boulevard from the hotel matters more than it did.
