About this happenin

On a Saturday in early November, 4th Street in Santa Ana fills with altars. Families, students, community groups, activists, artists and businesses each build one. Some remember a parent, a sibling or a friend. Others make a point about a social issue. Past altars have honored soldiers killed in war and women who changed history, and people who died of AIDS, cancer or diabetes. El Centro Cultural de México has organized this Día de Muertos celebration since 2002, and volunteers still run it. It goes from noon into the evening on the block between Ross Street and Broadway, with cultural performances and live music alongside the altars. Kids can get their faces painted and join free art workshops.
