About this happenin
Contestants start playing at 9 a.m. at the Topanga Banjo Fiddle Contest and Folk Festival, held one Sunday in May at King Gillette Ranch in Calabasas, in the Santa Monica Mountains. It has run since 1961. A nonprofit run entirely by volunteers puts it on. The contests cover fiddle, traditional banjo, bluegrass banjo, mandolin, flat-picking guitar, ukulele, singing and bands, plus a step dance competition, and every contest instrument has to be acoustic. Featured performances start at noon. There are five stages, and jamming goes on all day, so bring an instrument and sit in. Food trucks, craft beer, workshops and artisans fill out the grounds, and kids get a craft and instrument petting zoo. Bring a picnic or a cooler if you like, but King Gillette Ranch asks you to leave your own alcohol and your dog at home. Parking is free, and kids 9 and under get in free for basic admission.
More in May: 12 other Los Angeles events.
