Self Help Graphics Dia de los Muertos Celebration
1300 1st St, Los Angeles, CA 90033
About this happenin
Self Help Graphics & Art, the Boyle Heights arts organization, holds its Dia de los Muertos Celebration on a Saturday in early November, a free, all-ages block party it calls one of the longest-running public celebrations of the holiday in the United States. It starts with a procession led by Danza Azteca from Mariachi Plaza to the party. The party has been held outside the organization's own building on 1st Street and, for three recent editions, at a county park, so the location can change. Live music and dance on the main stage are offered to the ancestors, and community members build altars of remembrance and resistance. The Muertos Market sells work by local artists and artisans next to Self Help Graphics prints. Free tickets go out through Eventbrite. The season starts in October with free Saturday art workshops at the East Los Angeles Library, and Noche de Ofrenda, an evening of altars and poetry, comes shortly before the main day.
More in November: 9 other Los Angeles events.
