Art Good founded the Catalina Island JazzTrax Festival in 1987, and it still brings smooth jazz to Avalon over two weekends each October. Thursday is the unplugged show, outdoors under the stars on Descanso Beach. Friday, Saturday and Sunday move indoors to the 1929 Avalon Ballroom on the top floor of the Casino, which looks out to sea. Friday is one evening session. Saturday and Sunday each have an afternoon and an evening session with two acts apiece, and doors open at 11:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. Every seat in the ballroom is reserved, and no outside food or drink is allowed. Full weekend series tickets go on sale the Tuesday of Thanksgiving week, and single-day tickets the Tuesday before Memorial Day weekend. Day-trippers can see every show on Saturday or Sunday and still catch the Catalina Express late boat back to Long Beach at about 11:30 p.m. There is no late boat on Thursday or Friday.
