Central Avenue Jazz Festival
4222 S Central Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90011
About this happenin
Central Avenue between Martin Luther King Boulevard and Vernon Avenue, once the music district of Black Los Angeles, becomes a free jazz festival on a Saturday in September. The grounds center on Central Avenue Jazz Park, a city park with its own stage and a tile mural of the neighborhood's jazz greats, and more music plays at the Dunbar Hotel, a 1928 landmark where Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday performed or stayed. A youth pavilion has games and hands-on music, and a health pavilion offers free screenings. Food and market vendors line the blocks. Recent editions have run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Parking is extremely limited, so the festival points people to Metro, where Vernon Station is the closest light rail stop.
More in September: 9 other Los Angeles events.
