Pasadena Chalk Festival
480 N Arroyo Blvd, Pasadena, CA 91103
About this happenin
Hundreds of artists spend a weekend on the ground in Brookside Park, next to Kidspace Museum near the Rose Bowl, working on large chalk murals. Expect portraits, cartoon characters, copies of old masterpieces and 3-D illusions. Nobody pays to get in, and free parking is in Rose Bowl Lot I. It started in 1993 as Chalk on the Walk, with about 150 artists at Centennial Square outside Pasadena City Hall. By 2010 it had grown to more than 600 artists, and Guinness named it the largest street painting festival. Bring a picnic. There's a DJ and food vendors, and the public votes on Sunday before the awards. Each artist also paints a small canvas for the silent auction, which closes on Sunday. The money goes to Light Bringer Project, the arts education nonprofit that produces the festival, for its programs in local schools.
More in September: 9 other Los Angeles events.
