Cinecon Classic Film Festival
11272 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90025
About this happenin
You won't see Casablanca or Gone With the Wind at Cinecon. The festival screens rare and unjustly forgotten films from the silent and early sound eras, mostly in 35mm, and a pianist plays live under the silents. It fills Labor Day weekend, from Thursday night to Monday afternoon, and was most recently at the Landmark Nuart on Santa Monica Boulevard in West LA. There are no single-film tickets, only full festival passes and day passes. A volunteer nonprofit runs it. Cinecon 1 was a handful of collectors showing each other 8mm silent films in a small room at a Holiday Inn in Indiana, Pennsylvania, in 1965. It moved from city to city for years and has been based in Los Angeles since 1990. Past honorees include Ann-Margret and Roger Corman.
More in September: 9 other Los Angeles events.
