About this happenin
On the Friday evening of Memorial Day weekend, the Garden Grove Strawberry Festival opens at 6 p.m. with a ceremony and a giant strawberry shortcake, free, one piece per person. The festival runs four days in Village Green Park, at Main and Euclid, and there is no admission charge. Concerts at the Garden Amp are free too. The parade goes by on Saturday at 10 a.m. with marching bands, equestrians, classic cars and a celebrity grand marshal, and dozens of carnival rides fill the midway. It dates to 1958, when the Chamber of Commerce put it on to celebrate the strawberry fields that then covered the area. The Chamber dropped it a year later, and residents formed a nonprofit to carry on. Local nonprofits are the only ones allowed to sell food, and they keep the profits from their food and game booths. The Red Head Roundup, a contest since 1959, still gives a prize for the most freckles.
