About this happenin
Cesar E. Chavez Avenue in East Los Angeles is the route of the Mexican Independence Day Parade, held on a Sunday in mid-September. School bands, horseback riders, folk dance groups, floats and dignitaries pass the crowds, and mariachis march in charro suits. The Comité Mexicano Cívico Patriótico, founded in 1931, put on its first parade in 1946, starting at Placita Olvera. Food stands along the way sell tacos and tamales, and ABC7 broadcasts the parade. The committee picks a new theme each year about the Hispanic community. It says all 32 Mexican states take part, each contingent in its regional dress. Yucatán's dancers bring the jarana, and Michoacán's bring the danza de los viejitos.
More in September: 9 other Los Angeles events.
