About this happenin
Saint Sophia Cathedral, at Pico and Normandie in Los Angeles, hosts the LA Greek Fest, a weekend of Greek food and wine on its grounds. More than 15,000 people come each year, by the organizers' figure, and the proceeds go to the cathedral and its community center, The Huffington. The food stands run to souvlaki, gyros, moussaka, spanakopita, dolmades and loukoumades, and the pastry table has baklava, diples, galaktoboureko and koulourakia. The bar pours ouzo, Metaxa, Mythos beer and Greek wine. Between meals there are docent tours of the cathedral, costume heritage presentations, cooking demonstrations, dance groups on the main stage and carnival games for kids. Parking is free and a shuttle runs continuously. The festival is cashless, and pets stay home.
More in October: 18 other Los Angeles events.
