Pow Wow at Puvungna
1250 Bellflower Blvd, Long Beach, CA 90840
About this happenin
Each March on the Cal State Long Beach campus, gourd dancing opens both days of the Pow Wow at Puvungna and Grand Entry follows. American Indian students started the gathering in 1969, and the university calls it the largest spring event of its kind in Southern California. Dance contests and intertribal dancing fill the afternoons, with California Indian cultural presentations in the program, and Saturday has run until 10 pm. Fry bread and Navajo tacos are sold on site, and American Indian vendors sell traditional and contemporary art. Puvungna was a village of the Tongva (also called Gabrielino or Kizh) and Acjachemen peoples, and it is held to be a sacred place. Admission and parking are free. Dancers and drums are welcome. Alcohol and drugs are banned, and so are pets other than assistance animals.
More in March: 6 other Los Angeles events.
