About this happenin
December 26 is the first day of Kwanzaa, and in South Los Angeles it opens with a parade, the KwanZaa Gwaride. It steps off at Crenshaw and Adams Boulevards and ends in Leimert Park. R.W. Akile organizes it through Kwanzaa People of Color, a nonprofit set up to keep the holiday's traditions alive. Once the parade is in, the park carries on as a festival through the week, presented with the Leimert Park Merchant Association, until January 1. Each day belongs to one of the seven principles. Umoja, unity, comes first, and its evening closes with a candlelight ceremony. Neighborhood shops host the days that follow, with live entertainment and vendors, and free food and giveaways turn up all week.
