On the last Sunday of April, Thai Town holds a free street festival on Hollywood Boulevard for Songkran, the Thai New Year. The Thai community of Los Angeles founded it at a meeting at the Thai consulate general in 2004, and the first one drew an estimated 300,000 people by the fire department's count. It has skipped years since, most recently 2023 and 2024 for lack of money, and came back in 2025. The day has opened with an alms offering to monks, followed by a parade, Muay Thai demonstrations and, at night, the Miss Thai USA pageant. Thai street food and desserts from local restaurants run all day. A nonprofit formed after the 2007 edition, Thai New Year Songkran Festival, now runs it.
