Blessing of the Animals on Olvera Street
125 Paseo de la Plaza, Los Angeles, CA 90012
About this happenin
On the Saturday before Easter, Main Street beside Olvera Street fills with dogs, cats, birds and the odd cow, all waiting to be blessed by the Archbishop of Los Angeles. The Blessing of the Animals has been part of Olvera Street since the street opened in 1930. In the pueblo's early days the priest from La Placita Church blessed farmers' livestock to keep it healthy; now the line is mostly pets, and the organisers welcome any animal you bring. The line forms at 1 p.m. in front of the Pico House, and the blessing runs from 2 to 3 p.m., with entertainment on the street from noon to 4. It is free and goes ahead rain or shine. You do not have to be Catholic to take part. Main Street closes between Arcadia Street and Cesar Chavez Avenue for the day, and there is no parking for trailers.
