About this happenin
Rice pounding is the main event at the Japanese American National Museum's New Year party. In the mochitsuki, a taiko group pounds steamed rice into mochi to the beat of the drums, and mochi samples go out while they last. The Oshogatsu Family Festival falls on a Sunday in early January, from late morning into the afternoon. Admission is free, and advance tickets are recommended. JANM has held it since at least 2001. Its home is the museum at 100 North Central Avenue in Little Tokyo, and while the museum's pavilion was closed for renovation it moved to the plaza at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center on San Pedro Street. Crafts and origami follow the zodiac animal of the coming year. A candy sculptor shapes that animal and others of the Asian zodiac out of candy, and the finished pieces go to kids as raffle prizes. The museum store sells fukubukuro, lucky grab bags, until they run out.
