Dia de los Muertos at Hollywood Forever
6000 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90038
About this happenin
The altars are the point of Dia de los Muertos at Hollywood Forever, a one-day festival on the grounds of Hollywood Forever Cemetery at 6000 Santa Monica Boulevard. The cemetery says it is the only one in the country that opens its gates to the surrounding community for the holiday, and it calls the festival the largest outside Mexico. Participants apply for a space and build altars at no cost. Prizes go to the best altars and costumes, and face painting is encouraged. Aztec and folklorico dancers perform and a ceremonial procession moves through the grounds, with music on one stage and theater and film on another. A children's plaza has crafts and readings, and the cathedral hosts an art exhibition. Entry is by ticket for anyone five or older, and parking is in the Paramount structures on Van Ness Avenue and Gower Street. Outside food and drink aren't allowed, and neither are pets. It runs rain or shine.
More in October: 18 other Los Angeles events.
