Dia de los Muertos on Olvera Street
125 Paseo de la Plaza, Los Angeles, CA 90012
About this happenin
Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles holds a nine-day Day of the Dead festival that its merchants have run for nearly 40 years. It starts on October 25 and ends on November 2, the Day of the Dead itself. The heart of it is the novenario, a procession that sets off at 7 p.m. each night. An indigenous Aztec group leads it with incense and a ceremonial blessing. Behind them come Aztec dancers and people dressed as skeletons, the Living Muertos. A Mayan blessing and soul cleansing comes before and after the walk. The procession ends at the Kiosko, where each night honors the loved ones of a merchant family or someone from the community, and everyone there is handed sweet bread and a drink. Community altars stand in the plaza for the whole nine days. Admission is free. The face painters are independent and charge for their work.
