Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival

About this happenin
Independent Shakespeare Co. stages the Griffith Park Free Shakespeare Festival every summer at the Old Zoo in Griffith Park, in a natural amphitheater on a grassy slope. Shows start at 7 p.m., Wednesday through Sunday. Your seat is wherever you put your blanket. The lawn nearest the stage is for blankets only, and low chairs go behind them. Neither the play nor the parking costs anything, but the company asks people to register ahead, because a busy night can fill the site. Pack dinner and a layer, since it gets chilly after dark. Alcohol is banned in Los Angeles city parks, and rangers do write citations. The festival began in 2003 in Barnsdall Park, where the first night drew 14 people and a dog. It moved to Griffith Park in 2010.
More in June: 10 other Los Angeles events.
