Christmas Tree Lane Lighting Ceremony
Santa Rosa Ave & Mariposa St, Altadena, CA 91001
About this happenin
On the first Saturday of December, a crowd at Santa Rosa Avenue and Mariposa Street in Altadena counts down, and more than 20,000 lights come on in nearly a mile of towering deodar cedars. Neighbors have lit the lane since 1920, and the association that keeps it going calls it the oldest large-scale outdoor Christmas lighting display in the United States. Local choirs and marching bands play before the switch, which happens just after dark, and community speakers take a turn. Winterfest fills the afternoon and evening of the same day with craft vendors, food trucks, kids' activities and photos with Santa. Both are free. The Christmas Tree Lane Association is all volunteer and gets no city funding, so donations and sponsors pay for the lights and the power bill.
More in December: 8 other Los Angeles events.
