Torrance Armed Forces Day Parade
3031 Torrance Blvd, Torrance, CA 90503
About this happenin
Tanks and armored personnel carriers roll down Torrance Boulevard every May, behind color guards and marching bands, while military aircraft fly over the route. The City of Torrance has held its Armed Forces Day Parade since 1960, when Mayor Al Isen and the Torrance Chamber of Commerce organized the first one, and the city says no military parade in the country has run longer. It nearly ended in 1979, when Proposition 13 left no money for it. The Torrance Exchange Club raised enough to save it. Crowds have reached 100,000, with as many as 8,000 people in the line of march. The Grand Marshal leads off with a senior officer from each branch, and one branch is the honored service each year. The parade steps off on a Saturday afternoon, at 1:30 p.m. last time, and watching is free. Military exhibits fill the City Yard from Friday to Sunday, and park and ride buses run there from the Regional Transit Center.
