Naples Island gets two boat parades on one Saturday night in December. At 6 p.m. the large boats leave Naples Plaza Park on a long loop of Alamitos Bay, past the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club and down the main channel toward Seal Beach. Half an hour later the small boats, kayaks among them, start from the Appian Way Bridge and wind through the Naples canals, where low bridges keep them under 8 feet and the crowd looks down from the canal walls. The Naples Improvement Association, the island's neighborhood group, runs it, and the edition count is past 75. Each year has a theme, and judges score theme, lights, music and costumes, with the small-boat judges along Rivo Alto Canal. Candy stays on board, because throwing it from a boat is a misdemeanor.
