The Los Angeles Times started Food Bowl as a month of events across the city, and it has changed shape several times since. Its current form is two ticketed evenings at one venue, each with 30 or more restaurants serving unlimited tastings, along with craft drink makers, chef demonstrations, cookbook signings and a DJ. Everyone has to be 21 or older. The venue moves. Recent editions have gone from an outdoor night market under strings of lanterns to Barker Hangar, at the Santa Monica airport. A weekend pass covers both nights. VIP tickets add early entry and a private lounge, and they also unlock discounted parking. The latest edition tied its opening night to the Times' reveal of its 101 Best Restaurants in L.A.
