Frenchy's Stone Crab Weekend turns Baymont Street on Clearwater Beach into a free block party each October, marking the opening of Florida stone crab season with discounted claws. Michael "Frenchy" Preston started it in 1984 by selling his fresh claws to the public at just above cost, and the crowds have come back every year since. A second party, the Backlot Bash, runs behind Frenchy's Stone Crab and Seafood Market on the Dunedin Causeway, with its own band schedule. Know before you go: admission is free, and food, drinks and merchandise are sold on site. Both parties run from noon to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, with live bands rotating through the afternoon and evening. Claw prices are set close to the event, since the discount comes off a moving market price. On Clearwater Beach, the North Beach Park Plaza sits a few feet from the party with 600-plus spaces, and public street parking and metered lots are available within several blocks.
