Frenchy's Stone Crab Weekend throws a free block party on Baymont Street on Clearwater Beach each October to mark the opening of Florida stone crab season, with discounted claws. Michael "Frenchy" Preston started the tradition in 1984 by selling his fresh claws to the public at just above cost, and the crowds have come back every year since. A second party, the Backlot Bash, runs behind Frenchy's Stone Crab and Seafood Market on the Dunedin Causeway with its own band schedule. Both parties are free to enter, with food and drinks sold on site along with merchandise. They run noon to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and live bands rotate through the afternoon and evening. Claw prices are set close to the event, since the discount comes off a moving market price. On Clearwater Beach, the North Beach Park Plaza has 600-plus spaces a few feet from the party, and public street parking and metered lots sit within several blocks.
