Gasparilla krewes turn up in pirate leather at Oktoberfest Tampa, which is a very Tampa way to run a German festival. The Bavarian beer garden runs three October days in Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park, under the downtown skyline, pouring German beer in 16oz cups and one-liter Masskrugs to go with the brats and pretzels. A ceremonial keg tapping opens the weekend. Schuhplattler dancers circle under flower arches, and the contests are stein hoisting and mustache growing. Friday is an evening session. Saturday runs from late morning until 11pm, and Sunday closes in the early evening. Passes come as single day or weekend, with same-day re-entry allowed. Admission is free for kids 12 and under and for active or retired military and first responders with ID. Tables are shared and first come, so a seat means arriving before noon. Park in the Poe, Rivergate Tower or Fort Brooke garage. Chairs and umbrellas aren't allowed, but dogs are. Leave the cooler at home.
