Orlando International Dragon Boat Festival & Asian Cultural Expo
3401 S Hiawassee Rd, Orlando, FL 32835
About this happenin
Twenty paddlers to a boat, more than 70 crews race 500-meter heats across Turkey Lake at Orlando's dragon boat festival, with an Asian cultural expo onshore. The boats run in bright color blocks by team, a drummer setting the stroke up front and a steersperson working the sweep at the stern, and the day makes room for the breast cancer survivor crews that have paddled here for years. Between heats the Asia Trend expo fills the lawn with taiko drumming, tai chi, folk dance and martial arts demonstrations, plus a marketplace, craft vendors, a Health and Wellness Village and a row of food trucks. Know before you go: admission is free and race-day parking is complimentary. Races begin at 9 am and continue through the day, with the festival running until about 4 pm. Viewing is from the shoreline at Bill Frederick Park, so a folding chair and sun cover are worth carrying in. It is a family-friendly event.
