About 5,000 people run or walk Orlando's Thanksgiving-morning 5K at Lake Eola in downtown, and a lot of them are in costume. Fewer than 200 turned up for the first one in 1989. Proceeds go to Meals on Wheels and other Seniors First programs for older adults. Bib pickup at the race starts at 6:30. Costumes are judged at 7:00, a turkey call contest follows at 7:45, the 5K starts at 8:00 and the free kids' Tot Trot at 9:15. Tot Trot runs are 100 to 400 yards by age group, and every finisher gets a ribbon. Entry costs less the earlier you register. Parking on the side streets is limited, and the Lake Eola garage at 133 E. Robinson St. charges by the hour. Inflatable suits that put a runner on a turkey's back are a frequent sight on the course.
