The underground tour at the Consolidated Gold Mine, about a mile from downtown Dahlonega, goes roughly 200 feet down. The mine ran from 1898 to 1906, then sat abandoned for 75 years until a coal mining family from Kentucky reopened it. You enter by three flights of stairs and two ramps, and strollers, walkers and wheelchairs aren't allowed underground. It's a little damp down there, so wear closed-toe shoes. Tours leave every 20 to 35 minutes, and weekdays from 10 to noon are the busiest because of large groups. Every paid ticket includes a gold panning sample, and any gold you find goes home with you in a bottle.
