In 1974, the high school students behind the bestseller The Foxfire Book used its royalties to buy land on Black Rock Mountain in Mountain City, Georgia. More than 20 historic log buildings were moved onto it and furnished with artifacts of Appalachian life from 1820 to 1940, and the Children's Village has kid-sized cabins to play in. Last admission is at 3 p.m. The craft demonstrators keep their own hours, and a call to 706.746.5828 will tell you whether one is in that day. Les Barnett, the Canjo Man, builds instruments out of cans, pans, cigar boxes and Moonpie tins, and he often plays them on the porch of the Gott Cabin.
