Tremé Fall Festival
1210 Governor Nicholls Street, New Orleans, LA 70116
About this happenin
The Tremé Fall Festival spreads across the yard of St. Augustine Catholic Church and the streets around it each October, and it is free to walk in. It starts with a second line: social pleasure clubs and Baby Dolls walk behind local brass bands through the neighborhood, and anyone with a handkerchief is invited to fall in. Bands play the main stage through the afternoon while buskers work the blocks nearby. Local food vendors and artists set up along the streets, and festival merchandise is on sale. Friends of Tremé Culture runs it, and the money stays in the neighborhood. St. Augustine, dedicated in 1842 and described by the organizer as the oldest African-American Catholic parish in the country, gets repair funds, and local music and culture groups get grants.
