Kilted competitors throw the caber, sheaf, hammer, stone and weight over bar at Highlander Park one Saturday each spring, in heavy events run by the Foundation for Scottish Athletics. Massed pipe bands and a full Clan Village share the grounds. Solo pipers and drummers compete through the morning while Highland dance judging goes on in the community center all day. A kilted 5K threads through neighboring Hammock Park. The night before, pipe bands and clans march free through downtown Dunedin. Gates open early morning and the field runs into the evening. Opening ceremonies and the clan parade come at midday; the massed bands closing ceremony and awards follow in the late afternoon. Admission is ticketed in advance through the Dunedin Scottish Arts Foundation. Bring folding chairs; coolers, tents and pets other than service animals aren't allowed. General parking is remote, with complimentary shuttles from Dunedin High School and North Dunedin Baptist Church, and from Our Lady of Lourdes. Accessible parking at the Dunedin Community Center is first come, first served.
