About this happenin
One Saturday each spring, Dunedin's Scottish streak takes over Highlander Park: massed pipe bands, caber tossers, Highland dancers and a full Clan Village. The Foundation for Scottish Athletics runs the heavy events, where kilted competitors throw the caber, sheaf, hammer, stone and weight over bar. Solo pipers and drummers compete through the morning, Highland dance judging fills the community center all day, and a kilted 5K threads through neighboring Hammock Park. The night before, pipe bands and clans march free through downtown Dunedin. Know before you go: gates open early morning and the field runs into the evening, with opening ceremonies and the clan parade at midday and the massed bands closing ceremony and awards in the late afternoon. Admission is ticketed in advance through the Dunedin Scottish Arts Foundation. General parking is remote, with complimentary shuttles from Dunedin High School, North Dunedin Baptist Church and Our Lady of Lourdes; accessible parking sits at the Dunedin Community Center, first come first served. Bring folding chairs. Coolers, tents and pets other than service animals stay home.
