Master sand sculptors from Europe, Canada and across the US spend four days carving room-sized figures into Treasure Island Beach, and admission is free. You watch the work happen: packed columns of sand become mermaids, shipwrecks and faces while you stand at the rope line. Voting for the People's Choice award closes Saturday afternoon, winners are announced that evening, and fireworks follow after dark. Live bands, a food court and beer garden, and a craft marketplace fill in around the sculpture field. The finished pieces stay up for an encore viewing weekend, and often last into January when the weather is kind. Know before you go: admission is free, at 10400 Gulf Blvd. Grounds open at 10am daily, running to 10pm on the main weekend's Friday and Saturday and 6pm on other days. The event is cashless, so bring a card for parking, drinks and merchandise. Free shuttles run from off-island lots. Kids get free kite and sand sculpting lessons on Saturday afternoon, beach wheelchairs are free with a driver's license, and beach rules bar dogs, glass and smoking.
