Master sand sculptors from Europe and from across the US and Canada spend four days carving room-sized figures into Treasure Island Beach. Admission is free, and you watch the work happen from the rope line as a packed column of sand turns into a mermaid or a shipwreck. People's Choice voting closes Saturday afternoon and the winners are announced that evening. Fireworks follow after dark. The sculpture field shares the beach with live bands, a craft marketplace, a food court and a beer garden. The finished pieces stay up for an encore viewing weekend and often last into January when the weather is kind. The address is 10400 Gulf Blvd. Grounds open at 10am daily and close at 10pm on the main weekend's Friday and Saturday, 6pm on other days. The event is cashless down to the parking, so bring a card. Free shuttles run from off-island lots. Kids get free kite and sand sculpting lessons on Saturday afternoon. Beach wheelchairs are free with a driver's license. Beach rules keep dogs off the sand and ban glass and smoking.
