The Master Gardener Volunteers of UF/IFAS Extension Orange County spend the year raising cuttings and seedlings, then sell the results on the first Saturday in March at the Extension office on South Conway Road. Roughly fifty plant, craft and food vendors fill the grounds: orchid growers, bromeliad specialists, native nurseries, fruit tree sellers, beekeepers, and food trucks near the entrance. Volunteers run demonstrations along the walkways of the Exploration Gardens on orchid care, seed starting, container gardening and microirrigation, while auditorium talks cover Florida native landscaping, starting a community garden, and building backyard habitat. Orange County 4-H staffs the youth pavilion, where kids paint rocks and plant a tomato seed. Know before you go: admission is free and the festival runs 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., with the keynote sessions at 11, noon and 1. The Mobile Plant Clinic tests soil pH for $2 a sample, so bring a bag of yours. Bring a box or wagon for the plants.
