Fire in the Park fills Avalon Town Park with smoking stockpots each January, as teams compete in Texas Red and Homestyle for a pediatric cancer charity. What began in 2011 as a backyard party now draws a few thousand people to Downtown Avalon Park and has raised substantial money for the For Kids' Sake Foundation, which funds neuroblastoma research. Judges score on aroma, color, consistency, taste and aftertaste, while the People's Choice winner is decided by the public dropping coins at whichever booth they liked best. A cornhole tournament, a Kid Zone, live music and a 50/50 raffle fill the rest of the park, with prizes for best decorated booth and best dressed team. Know before you go: gates open at 10am, chili goes to the judges at 11am, bands play noon to 2pm, teams serve samples until about 2:30pm, and awards are announced at 3pm before the day ends at 4pm. Tasting tickets are sold ahead of time through the organizer, and the Kid Zone makes this an easy one to bring children to.
