Each May, visitors line up at Guang Ming Temple in Orlando to bathe the Buddha, ladling fragrant water over a small standing statue as a gesture of clearing the mind. Guang Ming, on Hoffner Avenue in southeast Orlando, has served the city as a Fo Guang Shan temple for more than three decades. Buddha's Birthday is the day it opens widest, free to anyone, with blessing ceremonies and taiko drumming. The day starts at 10 a.m. in the main shrine, where monastics lead chanting and an offering ceremony before a packed hall. Cultural performances hold the front courtyard through midday, and a vegetarian food fair sets up in the side courtyard. The festival runs into mid afternoon, so late morning catches both halves. One upstairs room runs mindful arts and crafts, and like the water ritual, the craft tables were built with children in mind.
