Sunset Drive (SW 72nd Street) in downtown South Miami is home to SOMI Art Fest, a free juried art show. It started in 1984 as a small show of 25 booths, brought in by local merchants who wanted more shoppers on the street. Today more than 100 artists come from across the United States and Canada, and the booths run along the blocks between US 1 and Red Road. It always lands on the weekend after Presidents' Day in February. Hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. Expect paintings, photography, sculpture and jewelry among the tents, plus a food court and a beer garden. Parking is on the street and in nearby garages, and anyone who would rather skip the car can use the South Miami Metrorail station. The Rotary Club of South Miami produces the show, and what it raises goes to scholarships for South Miami students and other service projects through the club's foundation.
