About this happenin
On the last Friday of every month, starting at noon, Calle Ocho in Little Havana hosts Viernes Culturales (Cultural Fridays), a street festival with cigar rollers and domino games. Live music and dancing fill a street that costs nothing to walk, and more than 30 local artists and artisans set up along it. The galleries on SW 8th Street stay open, and Cuban restaurants handle dinner. The first one was held on May 26, 2000, and about 2,000 people came. The idea grew out of the City of Miami Planning Department, whose 1984 Latin Quarter Study had recommended year-round cultural events for the neighborhood. Viernes Culturales also runs the Little Havana Welcome Center, open daily from 10 to 4. Reserve a spot through the link on viernesculturales.org and you can join historian Dr. Paul George at 7pm for a free walking tour of Little Havana.
