Merrick Festival Caroling Competition
550 Biltmore Way, Coral Gables, FL 33134
About this happenin
The Merrick Festival Caroling Competition is a free contest at 550 Biltmore Way in Coral Gables, run by the not-for-profit Merrick Festival, where school choirs from Miami-Dade and Broward sing carols in front of a 32-foot steel poinsettia tree. It began in 1987 with 15 schools. About 30 middle and high schools now take part, more than 1,500 students, competing for cash prizes that go to their school vocal programs. The competition opens the Wednesday after Thanksgiving and runs each day through Sunday. An awards show follows on the Tuesday after, when the grand prize winners sing again. Each choir gets a half-hour slot, with the first choir on at 7 p.m. (3 p.m. on Sunday). The program is non-sectarian and covers the music of the season whatever its origin.
