Chalk artists kneel on the sidewalks of 22nd Street South for one day, drawing across two blocks of the historic Deuces. There are about two dozen of them, and the Pinellas Diaspora Arts Project keeps it family scale: professionals work beside beginners and kids with a box of pastels. Each edition is built around an environmental theme, with a midday panel of local water and climate experts at the WADA ArtsXchange around the corner. Kids get face painting and other activities, and there's music. The Deuces kitchens stay open, so lunch is a few steps away at Lorene's Fish and Crab House, Heavy's, Catalyst or Urban Drinkery. The artists work on 22nd Street South between 7th and 9th Avenues South, and the panel meets at 515 22nd Street South. It usually starts at 10 am and wraps up by late afternoon. Families sign up on the festival site, on a different form from the artists and volunteers. Rain takes the art away, so go the day of.
