Independent film takes over the AMC screens inside the Mall at Sundial for four days at the turn from April into May, shorts and features alike. Sunscreen started in 2006 with 34 films and a standing-room crowd at the Studio@620. The slate has since grown past 200 titles, with panels and seminars aimed at people who actually make things. A local nonprofit, the St. Petersburg-Clearwater Film Society, runs it. Filmmakers stay for the Q and A after their own screening, and a red carpet and press line set up right in the mall concourse. At the evening parties you can end up in a room with the director of the short you watched that afternoon. Screenings are at the Sundial AMC 12, 153 2nd Avenue North in downtown St. Petersburg. Passes and tickets sell through the festival site, where the full schedule posts closer to the dates.
