Pier 60 Sugar Sand Festival

The sand sculptures at Pier 60 are carved by hand from about 1,000 tons of beach sand, inside a 24,000 square foot tent that goes up on the sand beside the pier each spring in Clearwater Beach. Eighteen master sculptors take on a fresh theme every year with no molds, still carving while visitors walk through, and after dark projection mapping and augmented reality light the pieces. Out on the beach there are street performers, live music, fireworks, a ferris wheel and free sand sculpting classes. The free downtown park and ride and the Jolley Trolley spare you the beach traffic, though the Pier 60 lot is closest. The exhibit runs 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday and until 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday, and since the sculptures sit under the tent, weather rarely cancels. Admission is ticketed, with children 5 and under free. Gate rates drop for military, first responders, teachers and healthcare workers on Frontline Fridays, and for ages 60 and up on Timeless Tuesdays. Bring a blanket or a low chair. Glass, canopies and pets aren't allowed. Sand wheelchairs are free, first come.
