St. Johns River Festival of the Arts
E First Street at S Palmetto Avenue, Sanford, FL 32771
About this happenin
Each spring the brick streets of Historic Downtown Sanford turn into an open air gallery, with more than 140 juried artists showing along First Street and Palmetto Avenue. This is a serious judged show, with painters, sculptors and craft artists competing for over $15,000 in awards, but it stays loose at street level: Art in Action demonstrations where artists paint and sculpt in real time, chalk art on the pavement, roaming performers, live music, and a food court a few blocks from the Riverwalk on Lake Monroe. A nonprofit runs it, and proceeds go to its Art for Kids program, which funds art education and scholarships for Seminole County children. Know before you go: admission is free and so is parking, and organizers publish a downtown parking map for the weekend. The festival typically runs Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. A hands on kids art tent makes it easy to bring children along.
