There's chalk art on the pavement along First Street and Palmetto Avenue in Historic Downtown Sanford each spring, and at the Art in Action demonstrations artists paint and sculpt in real time. More than 140 juried artists compete for over $15,000 in awards. The judging is serious, but street level stays loose, with roaming performers and live music. A food court sits a few blocks from the Riverwalk on Lake Monroe. The nonprofit behind it puts the proceeds into its Art for Kids program, which funds art education and scholarships for Seminole County children, and a hands-on kids art tent makes it easy to bring your own. Parking downtown is free, and organizers publish a map of it for the weekend. The festival typically runs 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, and admission is free.
