Three blocks west of Winter Park's Park Avenue, Central Florida folk and urban artists bring paintings and quilts to Shady Park each spring for the Hannibal Square Heritage Center Folk & Urban Art Festival. The Heritage Center, founded in 2007 by Crealdé School of Art with residents of the historically Black west side, chooses the artists, and the day feels like a neighborhood telling its own story. African drumming and dancing run alongside the tents with live music and storytelling. Children build carnival headdresses and armbands, then parade them through the park around midday. Food vendors set up on the grass, and the Heritage Center opens for tours of its photograph and oral history collection. The festival runs on a Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Shady Park, a 3.28 acre green at 721 New England Avenue, has a pavilion along with its benches and picnic tables, and it sits across from the Heritage Center at 642 West New England Avenue.
