About this happenin

The Hannibal Square Heritage Center Folk & Urban Art Festival fills Shady Park each spring with paintings, quilts and handmade work by Central Florida folk and urban artists, three blocks west of Winter Park's Park Avenue. The Heritage Center, founded in 2007 by Crealdé School of Art with residents of the historically Black west side, curates the roster, so the day reads less like a juried art show and more like a neighborhood telling its own story. Live music, African drumming and dancing, and storytelling run alongside the tents, and children build carnival headdresses and armbands, then parade them through the park around midday. Food vendors set up on the grass, and the Heritage Center opens for tours of its photograph and oral history collection. Know before you go: the festival runs on a Saturday from 10am to 4pm. Shady Park is a 3.28 acre green at 721 New England Avenue, with benches, picnic tables and a pavilion, across from the Heritage Center at 642 West New England Avenue.
