About this happenin

Orlando Japan Festival fills the great lawn at Kissimmee Lakefront Park with taiko drumming, koto music, martial arts demos and takoyaki stands each November. The Japan Association of Orlando has run it for more than two decades, and the day opens with a mass taiko piece that puts a hundred drummers on the field at once. Around the stage there is nihon buyo dance, a cosplay contest, and hands-on tables for calligraphy, origami and tea ceremony, alongside booths selling crafts and anime merchandise. Food runs to yakisoba, okonomiyaki, sushi and taiyaki. A grand raffle with round-trip tickets to Japan closes the afternoon, and proceeds support the local Japanese supplementary school. Know before you go: admission and parking are both free, and the festival runs from late morning to late afternoon. It lands on a Sunday on open lakefront grass, so a hat, sunscreen and a folding chair are worth packing. Families are the core crowd, and plenty of it sits at kid height.
