About this happenin

The Florida Highwaymen were young Black painters who, locked out of galleries in mid-century Florida, worked fast in cheap oils and sold the state back to itself from the trunks of their cars along US 1. Mount Dora hands them a park pavilion twice a year, and it is still a selling floor rather than a museum. Surviving original members and the second generation who learned at their elbows lean framed poincianas, moonlit rivers and windblown palms against easels and folding tables, talk through how a royal palm goes down in minutes with a palette knife, and take your money directly. Know before you go: the show runs 11am to 5pm at the Donnelly Park Pavilion, on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Donnelly Street in downtown Mount Dora, and admission is free. It is presented by Heron Cay Bed and Breakfast Inn with Kelvin Hair, son of original Highwayman Alfred Hair; the inn answers questions on 352-383-4050. A second, smaller edition runs each August, so confirm which weekend you are booking.
