The Florida Highwaymen were young Black painters who, locked out of galleries in mid-century Florida, worked fast in cheap oils and sold the state back to itself from the trunks of their cars along US 1. Mount Dora gives them a park pavilion twice a year, with a second, smaller show each August, and it is still a selling floor. Surviving original members and the second generation who learned at their elbows lean framed poincianas and moonlit rivers against easels and folding tables. They'll talk you through how a royal palm goes down in minutes with a palette knife, then take your money directly. The show runs 11am to 5pm at the Donnelly Park Pavilion, on the corner of Fifth Avenue and Donnelly Street in downtown Mount Dora, and admission is free. Heron Cay Bed and Breakfast Inn presents it with Kelvin Hair, son of original Highwayman Alfred Hair, and the inn answers questions at 352-383-4050.
