A racer disguised as a flaming green dumpster chases a modified Power Wheels Mack truck around an outdoor track, and that is one of roughly 250 exhibits at the Central Florida Fairgrounds. Maker Faire Orlando fills three indoor exhibit halls and the grounds outside with combat robots, cosplay armor built from foam and paint, walls of patch cables and homemade synthesizers, 3D printing, laser cutting, fiber arts and the Power Racing Series, where teams spend no more than $500 turning a child's ride-on toy into something fast. Robot Ruckus, the combat competition, draws builders from around the country along with machines seen on BattleBots. The Maker Effect Foundation runs the whole thing as a nonprofit, and ticket money funds maker programs in Central Florida schools and makerspaces. Hours are 10am to 5pm both days and on-site parking is free. Outside food and drink aren't allowed, and neither are pets, though service animals are welcome. Educators, first responders, active military and veterans get in free with ID, and families with an EBT card pay $5 per person per day.
