Altamonte Springs lights up Cranes Roost Park for one December evening, with a 60-foot decorated tree, thousands of lights and a choreographed fireworks show. The City and Duke Energy run it together, and the shape of the night is consistent: live music and dance performances, train rides, kids' activities, and visits with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The lights go up around the park's lakeside walkway rather than sitting in one corner, so the whole loop is the display. Know before you go: admission is free and the event runs from 5 to 9 p.m., with the park at its best once it goes dark, which happens early in December. Food and beverages are sold on site, and coolers and glass are not permitted, so plan to buy rather than pack. Between the train rides, the children's activities and the Santa visits, it is pitched squarely at younger kids.
