A celebrity guest shouts O'zapft is over downtown Sanford at noon, when Hollerbach's taps its first Oktoberfest keg on the same day Munich taps its own. The Willow Tree Cafe has been the region's German anchor for decades. The tapping opens its Oktoberfest season in the restaurant and out back in the Erdinger-shaded biergarten, and the beer hall sits under a Kyllburg mural. If you don't own Lederhosen or a Dirndl, Hollerbach's Outfitters rents Trachten. Nick und Eckhard play Volksmusik from 1 to 4 and again from 6 to 9, and the restaurant serves until 10 pm on Saturdays. Priority seating is worth arranging by phone, with at least an hour's notice. All of it happens inside a working restaurant. Downtown Sanford has free parking and a free trolley, so leave the car and walk First Street.
