Eustis has thrown a party for George Washington's birthday every February since 1902, and no celebration of its kind in the country has run continuously for longer. GeorgeFest began as a thank-you to winter visitors at the old Ocklawaha House hotel and now fills eight days of historic downtown and lakefront Ferran Park: a carnival midway, national touring acts at the 1926 Alice McClelland Memorial Bandshell, craft and food vendors, fireworks, pageants, a bass tournament on the Harris Chain of Lakes, the Running of the Georges race, a dog jog, and a grand parade on the closing Saturday morning. The run stretches Saturday to Saturday and admission is free. Most of the live music and carnival action happens in the evenings. Ride wristbands are sold separately through the Lake Eustis Area Chamber of Commerce, which also manages the parade. Streets along the parade route close for it, so park a few blocks back and walk in.
