Each spring downtown Orlando fills with Puerto Rican flags, and the parade rolls from Robinson Street past Lake Eola Park to bomba drums and cabezudo puppets. The Florida Puerto Rican Parade and Festival gathers a diaspora that has reshaped Central Florida, and families come from as far as New York and Chicago. Each edition is dedicated to a different municipality in Puerto Rico and carries its own theme. The festival opens right behind the parade. More than 100 exhibitors set up, some selling food and others artisan work and island products, and live music runs all day on stage. The parade and festival are both free. The parade has stepped off at 11 a.m. from the corner of East Robinson Street and North Rosalind Avenue, and the festival follows at noon and runs into the night. Closures cover parts of Robinson Street and stretches of Magnolia and Orange Avenues, and parking nearby is limited, so arrive early. Organizers run it as a family event and set aside a children's area.
